Team Building - Can you help to create Eden on Earth?
Eden is an innovative and unique team-building challenge, where a successful outcome is determined by the decision to collaborate or compete. It’s a thought-provoking and fun activity that encourages teams to engage with real-life social and environmental issues while promoting effective cross-team dynamics.
BRIEFING INFORMATION
- OBJECTIVE: Your team’s objective is to create the largest Sustainable Community within 30 days. You will do this by travelling between cities completing tasks to earn Resources. You can use these Resources to buy plates (water, land, or people) to build teams’ communities and/or pay to travel to your next task.
- Each task is situated at a city and teams must use Resources to pay for travel between each city. They have the option of land or air travel, each of which has a different level of emissions associated, and this is added into the emissions gauge.
- Upon successful completion of the tasks associated with each city, you will be rewarded with up to 5000 Resources and the relevant Upgrade Card as depicted on your Route Planner. Your first task is the one associated with your home city, which is highlighted on your Route Planner.
START CITY
- Your team will be give a starting destination. Your first task is the one associated with your home city, which is highlighted on your Route Planner.
REWARD
- Upon successful completion of the tasks associated with each city, you will be rewarded with up to 5000 Resources and the relevant Upgrade Card as depicted on your Route Planner.
TRAVEL
- For subsequent tasks you must use Resources to acquire Tickets for onward travel around the world. There are 2 forms of travel; Surface and Air.
- Each consumes a different value of Resources and have a different effect on the environment through the emissions they produce. Each Ticket has instructions for a Task at the named destination.
MASTER ROUTE PLANNER
- The main focus of the activity is the Master Route Planner (MRP) which details the destinations available for travel as well as the Emissions Gauge. Only one team can attend a destination at any one time.
DESKS
- Alongside this are the desks. All trade is done at the following desks only:
- TRAVEL, REWARD & BUILD
- Teams return to these throughout the activity to either purchase their next travel ticket, collect their reward for completing a task, or trade Resources for plates to build their community.
BUILD
- To build a Sustainable Community you must exchange Resources for Land (green), Water (blue) and Community (grey) plates and their relevant Upgrades.
UPGRADE TOKENS AND UPGRADE CARDS
- On successful completion of a task, Upgrade Cards are issued as shown in the city’s circle on the Route Planner.
- At the Build Desk you may swap Resources for one of the Upgrades shown on the Upgrade Card.
- An Upgrade placed in the indent on a plate changes the plate value to that of the Upgrade.
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY
For a Sustainable Community, the sum of the Land plate values AND the sum of the Water plates, both independently, must be equal to or greater than or equal to the sum of the Community plates at all times.
For example,
- If the sum of the Community plates = 70, the sum of the Land plates must be equal to or more than 70 AND the sum of the Water plates must ALSO be equal to or greater than 70.
- Land and water values are calculated separately.
- Land and water values must be installed BEFORE the community can be put into place.
EMISSIONS GAUGE
- Moving from left to right as the global environment deteriorates, the row of lights above the Master Route Planner (behind the Travel Desk) shows the accumulated impact of everybody’s travel.
- The Emissions Gauge is reversible by 1 light per payment of Resources at the Travel Desk up to and including the first red light only.
- Should the first RED light come on, an Emergency Summit at the Forum WILL be called between all teams to decide on immediate action to reverse the Emissions Gauge.
- Should the second RED light come on at any time, an irreversible situation ensues and the drawn negative IMPACT CARDS remain live for the remaining days.
- Whilst GREEN lights are on as a result of the Resources you give to the reversal of the Emissions Gauge, positive IMPACT CARDS that affect everybody will be drawn.”
NOTES FOR REFERENCE
The irony of the activity, and the element that provides the transference of the learning to the real world, is that by travelling around the world to complete the tasks, teams increasingly contribute to the negative impacts such as globalisation, unsustainable resource use, pollution and climate change. So although teams are split they also must come together to control the overall emissions.
FAQS:
What are the rules of Eden: Teams Aim to build sustainable communities within a set time limit. They must deploy their resources carefully and monitor the Emissions Gauge as they compete (or collaborate) to save the world.
What kind of tasks will we partake in: Eden has a mix of tasks and challenges, from getting creative, to using your brain to solve challenges. Some example tasks include; identifying flags from around the world, creating your own Chinese dragon head from recycled shoe box, creating a new outfit from recycled clothing, identifying national anthems from across the world, understanding coordinates and measurements and so much more!
How Long will the activity last: We have scheduled a 2-hour period for Eden.
